Why Risk It?

Soy Fights Cancer*

There is no doubt that cancer is a devastating and sneaky disease—its victims often don’t see it coming. And once it arrives, it causes destruction not only to physical health, but also to emotional and spiritual well being. Prevention is the best way to cope with this terrible invader. A healthy lifestyle and good eating habits are necessary to arm our body against cancer cells.

In addition to getting the appropriate vitamins and minerals into our diet, there is increasing evidence that eating soy products may reduce our likelihood of developing cancer.[1] The reason for this is that soy protein contains isoflavones, a type of antioxidant that fights and prevents cellular damage. Soy also contains plant hormones that are similar to estrogen, a human hormone recognized for lowering the rates of some cancers. According to an article in Psychology Today (2000), “These estrogenic properties may help ward off prostate cancer in men by balancing out the hormone testosterone that fuels cancer.”[2] And the benefits of soy don’t just extend to men.

Japanese researchers conducted a study that compared 1200 women who had breast cancer to 23,000 healthy volunteers. The researchers found that the cancer-free women ate more soy-based foods than those who had developed the disease. In another Asian study, it was discovered that premenopausal women who were found to eat soy regularly had a 61% lower risk of breast cancer than those who ate it less often.[3]

We may not see the cancer enemy coming, but we can certainly prepare our body in the event that it arrives. Eating a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and soy may be the first step towards developing a good defense. Why risk it? Combine a healthy diet with physical activity and a well-balanced lifestyle, and you’ll be ready for most anything that comes your way.
